Decorating Flip Flops & Hair Bands-No Sew

PLEASE DONATE. I recently had 2 surgeries, do not have health insurance and live on Social Security. I will be delighted to share with you if you will appreciate how much time and knowledge this takes. Thank you. Linda

This is a fun easy project that you can get the kids involved in.  The decorations are glued on Velcro so that they are removable and the child can choose a new set to match her outfit.
Make as many sets as you like in different colors.

Here you can see two sets made with silk flowers and 2 sets made with fabric die cuts.

Making the basic disc and putting it on flip flops and a hair band.
Materials.  You need 1/4 a yard of buckram, a strong tacky glue, fabric, silk flowers and anything else you decide to decorate with.  You will also need a four and half inch length of Velcro for each set you make.  Cut it into three 1 1/2" pieces.  You also need some Heat n Bond.

If you aren't familiar with some of these products, view this blog.

Why Buckram?  Because it is a strong glue soaked fabric that can be layered by gluing together.
You need a pair of flip flops and a hair band in a basic color that can go with many colors.  I just bought these flip flops in a Target Store yesterday 75% off sale in their dollar sale and paid 25c and the hair band came from a set of two for 25c at a different time when they reduced the dollar stuff.  You don't have to spend a lot of money to make fun things.

For one set you will need to cut out six 2" and six 1 1/2" buckram discs.  You will also need to cut five 1/2" wide by 2" long strips of buckram.  I used a die cut machine to cut my circles, but you can find a jar lid or other object and draw around with a pencil then hand cut. If the child is old enough, this is something she can do.

Attaching a hair band disc.
Cut two slots in the center of the circle, wide enough for the hair band you are going to use.  Study the next photo to understand why.

Circle should be placed to one side of the hair band.  Cut two slots 1/2" wide with enough space to accommodate your hair band.  I am using a narrow band and only need a 1/2" space in the middle.  Put the strip underneath the band and thread through the slots like this.  Then glue the ends down and cut off any buckram that hangs off the side of the circle.

Take a second 2" disc and glue over the first one.  Let dry.

Glue two 1 1/2" discs together and glue the fuzzy sided piece of Velcro across the center of one side of the disc.

Glue the prickly piece of Velcro on the hair band disc.  Now your disc is ready for decorating so lay it aside to dry completely.

Flip Flops.

All Flip Flop straps are different and the width may be 1/2" or larger.  Lay a 2" disc on top of the shoe in the center and you can see through the buckram to mark the strap width.  You will make 4 slots so that the disc covers both straps and will hold tight when glued in place.  The strips will go under the straps and up through the slots.

Glue the strips to the disc and cut off any extra buckram.  Glue a second disc on top of this one, then make two 1 1/2" Velcro discs the same as you did the the hair band.

You will have a completed disc set like this.

Decorating.

For this set I took a piece of white satin fabric, wide enough and double the length I would need to make three 2" circles.  Using Heat n Bond I fused the satin together so that the circles would be white satin on both sides.  Then I cut them out.

I then glued the smaller circles with the fuzzy Velcro on one side of all three.  Then let dry.  See photo above to understand how they look when finished.

On the side without Velcro I took a silk flower layer (just pluck silk flowers apart) and glued them on the center of each disc.

I took a second layer of silk flower petals and turned them so that they filled the open spaces of the first and glued them down.

I then took a smaller white silk flower section and glued them in the center of each one.

The final finishing touch was to glue a clear stone in the center of each one.  This set would be perfect for a child to change into after a wedding.

The next set I purchased a bunch of flowers for $1 at the local dollar store.

Pluck the flowers apart and throw out all the plastic parts.  Save the leaves for another project.

This time I made green satin discs to put the Velcro discs on.

I used two layers of silk flower parts and glued a yellow rhinestone in the center.  Then I decided to add silver glitter.  Little girls love glitter.  Just edge the flowers with glue and sprinkle fine glitter over it.  Add glitter in the center as well while the glue holding the rhinestone is still wet.  When the flower is dry, knock off the extra glitter onto a paper plate to put back into glitter pot.  The photo above shows you how it adds something special to the flower instead of leaving it plain.

This set would be fit for a fairy to wear.  If your child likes fairy dress up check out these blogs.
I made this set using a nesting set of die cut flowers out of satin fabrics.

Then I made this set out of die cut leaves and added silver dragonflies on the top.  I turned the leaves going both directions for the shoes when die cutting them.  This way they looked right when placed on the shoes.  The hair band leaf I turned sideways.

Here they are when placed on the shoes and band.
