Make a nurses apron, hat and Teddy Bear hospital gown.
Every young child loves to play nurse or doctor and dressing the part is a lot of fun. Yesterday I went with my daughter for her appointment to a dentist in Houston, and while she was in there I made a trip down the street to a Joanne Fabric Store. They were having 4th July specials and I found this fabric in their red tag clearance fabrics and it was on sale for an additional half off. It was down to $3 a yard and was 60" wide so I bought 1/2 a yard for $1.50, which could easily make 2 aprons to fit a child. I loved the cartoon pictures of animals going through the motions of doctor/nursing care and decided it was the perfect colorful fabric to make this set. Fabric can make the gift, so use your imagination when you look for the right fabric.
I fell in love with this colorful fabric and it inspired me to work on this play set. I already designed an apron pattern and how to make it is on this link
I found this medical playset at my local dollar store. You don't have to spend a lot of money to make something special for a child.
I designed this apron for a budding chef and the 3 pockets were to hold cooking tools. They are also perfect to hold medical tools.
Last night I sat thinking about how to design a nurses hat for a child and decided the best way to keep in on a busy child's head was to mount it on a hair band. I cut out the RX patch from the same fabric to finish my set.
I wanted to design something besides the apron and hat and this morning it finally came to me to make a hospital gown to fit a Teddy bear. I raided my daughter's Teddy collection and found this 10" bear that had a lot of appeal. This poor Teddy fell off a bed and wound up with a few injuries.
I understand Teddy's embarrassment of wearing a hospital gown because I have been wearing them a bit too much as of late and I felt as exposed as he does.
How to make this set.
First follow the directions for the apron on the link above.
Nurse's hat.
This graph is on a 1" scale. You can recreate it by following my drawings after I made the graph. I make all my basic patterns on cardstock. If you have no desire to do work from a graph, you can contact me at lj@tuscanadesign.com to directly purchase a copy from me for $3, which includes postage.
Once you have made your cardstock pattern, draw around it on tracing fabric. You can purchase this product at any fabric store.
Cut two pieces out of white cotton fabric and one piece out of a fusible heavy duty interfacing. I use Pellon's craft bond because is nice and stiff for projects like this and fuses well.
With wrong sides together, sew around the outside edges and leave the curved bottom part open. Clip the corners and turn right side out. Put a little glue inside the curved edge to seal the two sides together and then topstitch around the outside edges to finish it neatly.
Follow pattern to make my cross and fuse 'Heat n Bond' on a square of red cotton fabric larger than the cross. Cut out the cross and heat set onto the hat as shown. Clip 3/8" in, all around the curved edge and iron it to keep it turned up. To learn more about Heat n Bond follow this link.
Buy a fabric covered hair band and glue the hat down onto it, lining up the center of the band and the hat. Use a strong water based tacky glue and hold the ends with clothes pins until it is dry.
Your child's nurses hat is now finished.
Follow this graph to make the hospital gown pattern or if you don't wish to make it, I can send it with the nurses hat pattern.
Once you have made the pattern, cut one on a fold and 2 pieces with an extra 1/4" at the center for the back. It has a seam allowance of 1/4" and fits a 10" tall teddy bear. Please do not ask me to design a pattern for any other size. I am very busy designing new patterns for this blog.
Join the shoulders and press open the seams. Then turn up the sleaves.
Join side seams and clip under arm curves.
Turn under 1/4" at the bottom hem and down the back pieces at the center.
Use bias tape and sew around neck. Then add a red corss if you wish or leave gown plain. I added the same RX sign off the main fabric.
Using 1/8" wide ribbon, cut 4 pieces for ties and sew them at the back. Now Teddy's gown is finished.

It holds everything she needs to make a house call to visit a sick patient.
