Power Dressing

Me aged around four wearing snow 'moon' boots and fly net 'veil' with my summer dress

This article brought back some fond memories:

Power dressing

You want her to wear the red dress to playgroup; she’s insisting on her mermaid costume. These days, the “you’re not leaving this house looking like that!” battles start young.

For many mothers of daughters, one of the best bits about having a little girl is the opportunity to dress her. Mothers of sons lament the lack of lovely clothing available to boys, and coo over the pretty womens dresses and adorable styles that reflect the sugar and spice that girls are, as tradition would have it, made of. And then there’s the question of colour, with girls clothing being available in everything from lolly pink to smart navy, while the hues of boys’ clothes tend to be a little more limited in range.

But there’s a flip side to the joy of dressing up your little dolly (and let’s face it, there’s almost certainly an element of this when it comes to clothing your female child) – and that’s when she starts exerting her independence and making her own choices about what to wear and how to wear it.

The perfectly conceived ensembles that you’ve bought for her get mixed and matched with other items; clothes from the dress-up box are worn, with staggering confidence, for a trip to the park or supermarket. Tutus and welly boots? Shorts over leggings? A sudden refusal to wear anything that isn’t pink; a sudden aversion to anything that isn’t at least a little bit princessy?

Sure, you can put your foot down. But should you? It’s worth remembering that her interest in clothes has probably come from you anyway, and that it’s important for children to feel and demonstrate a sense of autonomy. Letting your daughter express herself and her independence through her dress sense is one safe, healthy way that you can allow her to achieve this – far better in its visibility, surely, than more covert behaviour, which can’t necessarily be monitored.

As long as she is making choices that are appropriate for her own safety and wellbeing (ie – not provocative, and suited to the temperature) then the fact that she perhaps looks a little odd should probably be endearing rather than embarrassing or annoying.

One way to limit struggles over her clothes is simply to ensure that she doesn’t own any item of clothing that you don’t approve of in itself. That way, even if she wears it in a way that’s less than what you’d consider aesthetically pleasing, at least it’s not revealing / sparkly / emblazoned with a slogan – or whatever your personal dislikes happen to be.

By giving her licence to dress herself in her own combinations, you’re giving your daughter the chance to think for herself, build her self esteem and exercise her creativity. You may even be creating a budding fashionista to boot – and doesn’t every woman want a lifelong shopping buddy?

Man Wisdom: Shoe Saturday Statement Trainers

Kanye West and team

I thought it was about time I did a bit more men's wear, I simply adore this photo by the Sartorialist of Kanye West and his friends. Have you ever seen a more stylish lot? Besides the fabulously co-ordinate outfit, personalised cases and chic headgear the stylish trainers really caught my eye. I think footwear is am easy way for the guys to experiment with colour and style. Here are my top hits for this summer:

Colour and texture from Onitsuka Tiger Fabre the tweed toe is genius, Nike Vandal present the perfect example of neon with neutrals.

Whilst safely sticking to monochrome the Gola Zenith is far from ordinary with this sleek high top design, whilst the Gola Harrier takes on colour popping.

The Wonder of Hair Straighteners!

Maybe I am behind with the times and all that but I have never used hair straighteners. I have the straightest hair in the world, my entire family has enviably straight hair I never saw the point. That was until I last went to have my fringe trimmed and I was having a moan about how my fringe goes a wavy when it gets a bit long. She whipped out a tiny pair of hair straighteners and fixed my fringe in no time, impressive huh!
Then I see these new GHD adverts featuring Kate Perry, with beautiful waved and curled hair - did you know hair straighteners can do that too! I have been lusting after 1940's style waves for ages so I think it is time for me to try out hair straighteners after all.

I decided to have a nose around researching GHD as they are expensive, but I want a good quality pair if I am to get some. Now you know I love anything to do with anti-counterfeit information, so the GHD site was super interesting for me. I know full well that the counterfeiters had been forging GHD's for some time. In fact I saw a documentary about how dangerous the counterfeit straighteners are, they can cause burns and set on fire to name but a few dangers. Anyway I think the effots GHD have gone to, to help protect customers is excellent. You can register your straighteners with them to guarantee their authenticity and they have a function where you can enter the web site which has them for sale to check if it is an authorized retailer.
The site is also fully interactive with step-by-step styling tutorials and videos. So watch this space for some super hair styling - and if I never mention it again we will concede that I am not at all skilled with the hair styling!

Any of you have GHD's? Have you tried any of the fancy styles?

So Jackie O

The fabulous Jackie O

The people over at Mister Spex said to me, Pearl tell us which pair of sunglasses on our site are your favorite? Sure I said but before I tell you which ones I chose I will tell you a secret. Well maybe it is more of a delusional fantasy, but when I put on a pair of sunglasses I want to feel like a film star. Perhaps it is due to the fact that living Uoop Norf we rarely see the sun so it is a special occasion every time it decides to grace us. Or maybe it stems from my love of dressing up, who didn't don their dad's sunglasses as a child and jump around pretending to be a rock star? Anyway I like sunglasses, I love all the different styles, colours, designs around. Each summer there is an 'IT' pair and I really feel each style has its own persona. Like aviators for that cool cowboy style, Wayfarers for the indie chic, Prada perspex for the futuristic fashionista and of course the big, black frames for the glamour puss. It is the latter that I always turn to when it comes to choosing sunglasses. I like to hide behind their huge lenses, almost like a mask, I could be anyone, how mysterious. So you can imagine my delight when I finally decided on these Ray-ban's, to see the model was called 'Jackie O', fate I would say!

Ray-ban Jackie Ohh

Will prance around in them for you once they come!

Budget Fashion: Shoe Saturday - French Soule

French Soule espadrilles in Noir

I had been on the look out for some suitable summer shoes when these flat espadrilles caught my eye. I am not a fan of sandals when it is really hot, as I find the straps uncomfortable in the heat. Wanting an alternative to ballet pumps I though these would fit the bill. I was more than pleased when they arrived, they fit perfectly and the sole is really soft, yet supportive. The light weight canvas uppers will be perfect for the hot weather, they really feel like slippers! At the bargain price of just £12 they kick off my 'bargain fashion' series perfectly too. I will wear them with everything from jeans, shorts and dresses, such an easy shoe to slip on.

I ordered them from Spartoo, which have a huge selection of the espadrilles for men and women in lots of different colours and designs, here are some of my favorites.

Beige, Rayees Blue, Yukata

Now all I need to do is sit and wait for some sunshine,

Wedding Belle's

It is that time of year again isn't it? The sun comes out and all of a sudden everyone is getting married! There is nothing more exciting than a wedding but we can't all be Kate Middleton and have Alexander McQueen designer Sarah Burton run up a few frocks for our friends and family. There will be plenty of photographs being taken and you can't hide at the back in the official wedding snaps. So you need an outfit. But not just any old outfit, if you are close friends or family of the bride you will be seeing these photo's for years to come, getting the outfit right is important.

Taking an accent colour from a print dress and mirroring it in the accessories gives a fresh co-ordinated look.

It isn't all about looking good though, if you have a roll in the day such as Maid of Honour or Mother of the Bride you will need to be comfortable and confidant to deal with any last minute dilemmas which may arise. Weddings can be costly too, if you think of the extras such as the hen night - these days they can be anything from a cocktail evening to a weekend spa in Dubai, the wedding itself may not be near to your home so there is the expense of hotels to consider, the wedding gift and beauty treatments. It all adds up so your outfit needs to be affordable too.

A sheer blouse gives depth and interest to a simple outfit.

When looking for your wedding outfit there are a few tips you should always bear in mind:
1. Don't upstage the bride! Yes your outfit can be fabulous but also paired down and classic. Find out what colour the bride will be wearing and avoid it. These days not all brides wear white so do check with her.
2. Same goes for the bridesmaids, if you are not a bridesmaid that is, then try to avoid their dresses colour too.
3. Be comfortable. Weddings can start late morning and last until the early hours, if you are not staying nearby there may not be time to change outfits during the event so make sure those beautiful strappy sandals you have your eye on will be comfortable for ten hours.
4. Spares - the other option to uncomfortable shoes is to carry a back up pair with you but you will need a bigger handbag. Also if you are the Maid of Honour you will want to have a bag roomy enough to carry your own things and also those of the bride. Think make-up, perfume, hair slides, plasters, safety pins be prepared for every eventuality so the bride can stay calm.
5. Hats and fascinators - fabulous wear them, just be sure you are not blocking anyone's view in the service.

Don't be afraid to wear black to a wedding, just make it a bit more special like this gold lace trim dress and jacket.

With that all in mind it is time to put some real thought into the outfit. I would always recommend a dress with a jacket over it. The wedding service itself is more formal so you want to look smart and lean to the conservative side. Churches can also be draughty even in the height of summer so having a jacket to cover your arms is always a good idea. Wearing a jacket also allows you to transform your look from day to evening. Just because the top layer is more reserved doesn't mean the dress below has to be, generally the evening reception is more laid back so you can shrug off you jacket and let your hair down. If you find the wedding is going to be on a very hot day or even a beach location a great alternative is to wear a shirt, blouse or cardigan over a dress as a lighter option.

A simple suit is far from plain when embellished with crystals.

From experience the most successful wedding outfits are those with subtle yet stunning details. This can be achieved using texture, colour and embellishment. A classic suit is anything but boring when embellished with crystals; a black dress is far from plain with the addition of gold lace edging. If simplicity is more your thing try using colour, a bright cardigan which complements your dress can bring out the details or try monochrome for a bold contrast. You can also add interest to your outfit with texture such as ruffle or bow details, or try layering a sheer shirt over your dress to add depth.

A dress and jacket are the perfect wedding outfit.

All the outfits in this post are from Kaleidoscope a home shopping catalogue now available online as well as the traditional print version. They offer a wide range of stylish ladies fashion not just for occasion dresses but day and beach wear too. The site is very easy to navigate and has clear categories should you want to shop by occasion such as for mother of the bride dresses or party dresses. You will find all your needs met from the outfit to shoes and jewellery all at affordable prices for good quality, stylish clothes from sizes UK 10-22.

Monochrome is always chic for any occasion.

Shoe Saturday: Not Your Average Sandals

Whitney Port, Gwyneth Paltrow, Kate Moss

Its summer! Or so they would have us believe, we haven't see much sunshine yet have we. Either way that doesn't stop us shopping for the new season styles. There are so many different styles of ladies sandals being dangled temptingly at us from the glossy magazines, every season there is a new 'IT' style from flip-flops to gladiators and this season the plain brown leather 'Jesus' sandal. So much choice, but the sandals which have caught my eye are the ones with a little something special.

A diamante strap gives this pair of black sandals a glamorous edge, Best Mountain Ciao black

If simplicity is your thing the Paul & Joe Sister Bahia Suede with a little bow are anything but ordinary.

The ankle detail on these tan and black sandals adds interest, Elite Cassidy Black

There is always a place for leopard print for the glamazons, Vouelle Joni Black

For those who love embellished details the mix of beads on these sandals is sure to please, Elue par nous Goulee Black

I can almost feel the sun on my skin just looking at these beauties,
